A cyclist was hit and killed by a 2016 Honda Fit in Golden Gate Park while riding in a bike lan, another was hit by a speeding BMW SUV, and the last cyclist was killed by where I work...so much anger and sadness...why can’t cyclists and cars coexist in harmony?

Bike lanes are abysmal in places, even places with well placed bike lanes people still intentionally try to run cyclists over. That guy who ran over 5 cyclists a few weeks ago was bad enough...now this? Welp

Because the largest amount of cyclists, at least where I live, pleasure ride at rush hour like assholes, on 4 lane highways. And I say pleasure ride as in, riding a multi-thousand dollar bike in expensive gear. Then, they run stop sign, lights, etc. All while assuming we see them around a blind curve, so they can pull out in front of a vehicle doing double the speed they are capable of.

Yeah, still not seeing any reason to intentionally hit them.

You’ve not witnessed some of the cyclists I have apparently. For instance: one day, a retiree was going on a nice ride, at 8:30 am, in a construction zone. The line of traffic was nearly a mile backed up, because the fucker wouldn’t get over. Running him over is a little harsh, but getting out, taking his bike, throwing it, then leaving would suffice. Cyclists are worse than left laners.

Also, there was a bike lane he was not using, to add fuel to the fire.

No convenient hard protective shell on a bicyclist... Humans are not perfect, separation where possible, mitigate the consequences....

There obviously is a logical reason why that cyclist decided to take up the lane. There is some sort of hazard (probably that construction zone...hmmmmm) that impedes him from safely using the bike lane. And if someone is a dick to you on the road no matter what they ride/drive, there is no point in running someone over or; taking someone’s shit and destroying it. Remember: there were bikes before cars.

And have you heard of the Idaho stop?

It’s the same thing with motorcyclists, but I’m beginning to see cases where it’s plain intentional.

There was absolutely no logical reason for why he was A. There. B. Didn’t get over.

There were several biking trails in the area that he could have used, and better roads if he just had to have used the road.

Unless you can’t afford a car, or live in a congested urban environment, there is no reason to ride a bike during rush hour.

The Fit one has to have been murder (possibly random). The biker was hit head on *while in her bike lane*! Plus the car was spotted doing 60 mph inside Golden Gate Park. Hope those fuckers get put away for life.

I like riding my bike to work. It’s nicer than driving a car. That’s reason enough.

Why that guy was riding in front of traffic... I can’t tell you, I wasn’t there. It is possible he is an asshole. I can tell you there are situations where my safety is more important than your seconds. I can also tell you there are places where there is no reasonable accommodation made for cyclists to get out of the way of cars.

As a cyclist I try to do my best to live with cars, by both not getting in their way, and keeping myself safe. Sometimes it doesn’t work well.

This really hits close to home. I am a Bay Area bicycle commuter. I was happy today that I was able to bike every day of the week this week! I don’t ride in San Francisco and I have to say, overall the Bay Area is very respectful of bicyclists and motorcyclists (I am both).

I have tried to ride bikes in other parts of the country and it is scary. People driving cars are hyper aggressive against bicyclists in a way I really didn’t know was possible.

Really terrible that this has happened.

One thing I would like to say to people, please calm down your driving. Driving fast near residences and businesses not only puts pedestrians, cyclists, and other drivers at risk, but it is also less enjoyable and does not save any time. So often I am riding through a string of lights where cars pass me , only for me to catch them at every. single. light . Slow down and watch the stress of driving fade away. If you think every driver is an asshole, trust me, you’re the asshole.

As a cyclist, who apparently according to Jordan is an A-hole because I ride at rush hour (commute when I could, switched offices, so it’s by train now) on my nice bike in nice clothes because I had a shower at work and my commute should be pleasurable, I say it’s because there is a fundemental issue with “sharing” in the countries as we have a toddler’s view of it.

Our concept, “You can have it when I’m done with it.” not “Let’s have fun with this together.”

It applies to myriad social maladies we are seeing these days.

Anyone saying that since a cyclist runs a stop sign (drivers speed and text well driving, who can throw stones here?) they therefore should not be treated with respect, or worse are fair game to be hit, well, shame on them.

Is a driver really getting on a bicyclists about rule breaking? Trust me, drivers do all sorts of awful, illegal shit while driving their cars. The only difference, is that more people are doing the rule breaking in cars so it’s socially acceptable. Speeding, texting while driving, rolling stop signs; most drivers do that stuff; and it’s way more dangerous because they have a 3500 pound vehicle to run into things with.

There is a 4 way stop sign near my house where by far the majority of drivers don’t actually stop, no there is a park/school at one of the corners of the intersection.

But let me remind you, just like everywhere else in life, bicyclists being different than you or doing something to inconvenience you is not an excuse to think about being violent towards them as you suggested with the old retiree. Seriously, that shits messed up. Even if you’re joking, it’s messed up. Lots and lots of cyclists die every year because of that mentality, and there are virtually no consequences to drivers, even when they’re drunk or they leave the scene of the accident. Just take a deep breath the next time a biker is in your way and remember than you would have to be stuck behind them for aboout 4 blocks for them to make you lose a minute of your day. I almost never have a car behind me for more than 100 feet, let alone a whole block.

Your bitching and moaning about cyclists is old and tired. Try something else.
